About zimbabwe women writers association
ZWW is an arts and culture trust with women membership throughout Zimbabwe whose secretariat is based in Harare with the purpose(s) of promoting women’s literature and various forms of art, articulating issues affecting women through publishing and amplifying their voices, for the women’s socio political and economic development.
The organization was founded against the background that women had little public spaces in which to air their views – their literature was looked down upon by a male-dominated society which promoted stereotypical images of women and promoted their discrimination. ZWW chose to provide the space for women to articulate ‘unsafe’ issues that were fundamental to their needs – issues of rape, abuse, and in some instances stories of courage to urge each other on. This has been a space for promoting gender equality, identify challenges and learning from others by creating information sharing platforms for women in Zimbabwe. The organization has published several writings by women, often artistically presented to showcase the women’s experiences. The stories told often seek to reflect women’s current concerns, experiences and to share survival strategies.
